When puppies and babies get together, we are just beside ourselves. In this darling video, baby is sleeping peacefully when yorkie Misty started poking around. Curious to see what she was going to do, they pulled out a camera. We couldn't be more pleased at what they caught on video. Apparently, Misty didn't think her new buddy was cozy enough, and proceeds to nudge at the blankets until baby is securely tucked in.
To be fair, there is no evidence that dogs have any concept of tucking in babies or that the actions are intentional. Some speculate that dogs are just curious about the baby and while smelling and exploring end up inadvertently tucking the baby under the covers. Others believe that dogs learn to cover up babies from seeing parents do it. While we may never uncover the mystery behind the true reason, we can't get enough of it.
It should also be noted that introducing babies to dogs should not be taken lightly. Dogs who are typically very friendly and warm might be confused by the smells, sounds and movements made by a newborn. There is also the slim chance that a new baby may be seen as a threat to the family stability. The ASPCA recommends taking precautions to ensure that first introductions are pleasant for the pup. Try to keep the environment as quiet and relaxed as possible, and treats handy to reward calm behavior from the dog. Going forward, be sure to show your dog plenty of attention whenever you can, and communicate through your actions that a baby is a pleasant addition for the entire family. Many people find that in time, teaching a toddler how to behave appropriately around animals is harder than teaching the dog how to behave around children.
