Beach-goers Find Washed Up Shark Eggs

The ocean is full of fascinating creatures, some that lurk so deep in the water that we are unable to reach them. But even those species that we've come in contact with and have been studying for years are absolutely remarkable. Take the shark, for instance, who sits at the top of the food chain with a mouth full of menacing teeth. It's a terrifying creature but also a thing of beauty.


Did you know, that of the 400 plus species of sharks, about 40% of them lay eggs? According to Marine Life Expert Jennifer Kennedy, the eggs are laid in a protective case that has the ability to latch onto coral and seaweed. Often times these protective cases wash up on to shore and have earned the nickname "mermaid's purse." The photos below give you a glimpse at the case as well as the individual egg.
